Looking for a way to paddle around at your own pace? Rent a single kayak, a double kayak, or enough boats for a group and explore the La Jolla Ecological Reserve on your own!
Guests may see a variety of marine life while kayaking around the ecological reserve. You might see different kinds of fish, birds, seals, sea lions, dolphins and even whales (depending on the time of year). You will also get to see the beautiful town of La Jolla from the water, and take in the amazing scenery!
Please note that we give a safety briefing to each renter, but we do not provide kayaking lessons for rentals. If you're new to kayaking and would like to learn how, we recommend that you check out our guided tours first.
Kayak Rentals are NOT permitted into the Sea Caves. All guests must be able to swim comfortably in order to take a kayak out on their own. All participants must be five years or older in order to participate in the activity.
La Jolla Kayak Rentals
Our kayak rentals give you 90 minutes to cruise around the reserve at your own pace. Weāll provide all the equipment youāll need, along with a safety briefing so you know where you can and canāt go. Youāll just need to check in at our shop, and kayaks and paddles will be waiting for you at the beach!
Depending on the conditions, kayak rentals may not be available. Be sure to call to make a reservation or check for availability. If youāve never kayaked on your own before, we recommend you check out our guided tours first.

La Jolla Kayak Rentals FAQ
Itās a San Diego City rule that all kayak rentals stay out of the caves, due to safety. Itās a $300 fine from the Life Guards if a kayak renter enters the sea caves.
If you would like to kayak through the Sea Caves, book one of our Sea Cave Kayak Tours.
After check-in inside our shop, each guest will be shown a map of exactly where to paddle and where not to paddle. Employees at the beach will also assist guests before they hit the water where itās safe to paddle.
Each time block is set for 90 minutes. If youād like extra time, please reserve the
next available time block.
Sea Kayaking takes place in the beautiful ocean, which has one major difference from freshwater kayaking: Kayak Surfing! When returning to land in a Sea Kayak, you get the opportunity to catch and ride a wave all the way in.
We've had tons of people who have never kayaked before and don't know how to swim that had amazing experiences. However, if your activity includes snorkeling, then by state regulations you do need to be comfortable in the water.
No experience is required to come on a tour! Weāve had everyone from children to senior citizens who are first time kayakers come out and have a blast on one of our kayak adventures.
We transport the kayaks and paddles down to the beach. All you need to do is check-in at our shop, and walk down to the beach with your life jacket.
No. Due to city rules and insurance regulations, the kayak rentals must stay at La Jolla Shores.
We kayak in a Marine Protected Area, so nothing can be taken but photos. We will paddle and snorkel with sea life, and take direction from The Marine Protection Act of 1972.
Absolutely! La Jolla is one of the best snorkeling spots in California. If you go on a tour with us, weāll even give you a great discount on snorkel gear. Just ask us if you want to try!
We use tandem sit-on-top kayaks because they are safer and more fun!
The weight limit for each kayak is 425lbs / 193kg. If the combined weight of you and your partner is close to 415lbs, we recommend purchasing two (2) single kayaks instead of a tandem kayak.
The city of San Diego and the San Diego lifeguards have set the age requirement at 5 years and older.
There is plenty of parking in the residential streets surrounding our shop where you can park all day. Do not park in the lot adjacent to our shop: we don't own it, so if you park there you run the risk of being towed. We also do not recommend parking in a 90 minute commercial zone, as you will be here longer than that and will run the risk of getting ticketed.
We have lockers available for rent (they're $6) if you want to leave your stuff behind. If you donāt want to rent a locker we recommend keeping your valuables in your car.
